Since 1990 he has also been in charge of the University’s museum collections. He developed the Museum Collections unit into a professional service and he led the project to establish the Museum of the University of St Andrews (opened 2008).

Ian’s research is in two main areas: ancient numismatics, including the coinages of ancient Greece, Rome, Persia and Carthage, and museum studies, including the history of museums, museum development and services, and the museum collections of St Andrews University. He has supervised student research on a wide range of museums and collections subjects.
