St Andrews and Leiden
Erasmus Exchange Programme
The Schools of Art History, Classics, Divinity and History have an established Erasmus Exchange Programme with the University of Leiden, enabling St Andrews students to spend one semester studying in the Netherlands. In exchange, Leiden students are able to take modules at St Andrews.
Founded in 1575, Leiden is the oldest university in The Netherlands; like St Andrews, its premises are scattered throughout the city. Leiden has a population of roughly 120,000, 18,000 of whom are students; it is also exceptionally well connected to Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht. For more information about Leiden see http://www.leidenuniv.nl/en/studyinleiden/
Because the University of Leiden offers a number of modules each semester which are taught in English it is not necessary for St Andrews students to speak Dutch. However, students who are interested in applying should be open to learning some conversational Dutch, and the University does offer opportunities for students to take beginners’ classes.
For a full list of Undergraduate modules offered in English, please consult the University of Leiden web-pages: http://www.leidenuniv.nl/en/studyinleiden/sap/Â
