Social media guidelines

Social media is used by Schools and units at the University in a variety of formal and informal ways, and the University wants to encourage and support the responsible and creative use of this medium wherever possible. These guidelines are sensitive to personal and academic freedoms. They are intended to support good practice and to protect staff, students and the University from risks sometimes associated with the use of social media.

These guidelines are mostly simple common sense, but societal experience suggests that the informality and immediacy of social media can predispose some users to errors of judgment and a false sense of security.

The guidelines apply principally to the use of social media by staff for academic and business purposes, but should also be borne in mind when using personal social media accounts. They apply during and outwith office hours and regardless of whether platforms are accessed using our IT facilities and equipment or equipment belonging to members of staff.
