Teacher Education

During July and August, English Language Teaching (ELT) offers high level language courses combined with specialist methodology training for English language teachers. Courses can be taught either in St Andrews or in the participants' home country.

Each course can be tailored to suit participants’ special interests and is led by teacher trainers who are all practising proessionals with many years’ experience.

West Sands beach

This course is designed to give participants an opportunity to improve their language skills and expand their knowledge of both the theory and practice of English Language Teaching in the excellent teaching and learning environment of the University’s English Language Teaching department.

A combination of workshops, lectures and an extensive social programme will enable participants to hone their teaching skills and develop their language in one of the UK’s oldest university towns.

ELT is a well-established teaching and teacher training centre and provides a stimulating and supportive environment, where overseas teachers receive considerable personal attention and academic supervision.

We are confident that this personal attention, combined with the practical experience and expertise of our trainers, ensures we offer high quality training to all teachers on our courses.

It is our hope that after the course, you will leave with new insights into teaching English language and a broader understanding of contemporary UK which will help you in your teaching career.

Our teacher training courses include language improvement classes, new developments in ELT methodology, cultural input as well as an exciting social programme. Each course has a core language development and improvement strand, focusing on developing confidence in all four skills as well as improving teachers’ use of contemporary language. The course can be tailored to suit participants’ special interests and are led by teacher trainers who are all practicing teachers with many years’ experience.

Language improvement

The aim of this strand is to build your confidence in using English in the classroom and could include vocabulary building, grammar workshops, lecures and presentations by participants.

Language and methodology

This will be tailored to suit participants' needs and will offer an overview of different approaches to teaching English as well as teaching the four skills and materials development. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their current practice and attitudes to teaching and learning.

Content and language integrated learning (CLIL)

In this element of the course, we look at the core features of this methodology and planning for the content- based classroom. The focus will also be on designing materials for CLIL and incorporating critical thinking into tasks.

If the course takes place in St Andrews, participants will be able to take advantage of the excellent cultural and sports facilities that the University and the town have to offer. There are numerous lively bars, cafés and restaurants in town, as well as a cinema and a small theatre. Evening visits to these can be arranged.

Throughout the summer ELT holds regular ceilidhs (evening parties with Scottish dancing) for its summer students. In addition, mid-week and weekend excursions will be arranged so that you experience the majestic Scottish landscape and its vibrant cities.

Training courses can be organised throughout July and August for a period of two weeks. Courses can be taught either in St Andrews or in the participants' home country.

Fees will therefore depend on the number of participants and location of the course.
