Sierra Leone

If you are a student living in Sierra Leone, there are specific entrance requirements depending on which qualifications you are studying. There are also English language requirements and country-specific fees and funding arrangements for students living in Sierra Leone.

Undergraduate - academic requirements

In addition to meeting the entrance requirements of the Faculty you will be studying in, you must also obtain certain grades in the qualifications you are studying for.

  • High school qualifications from this country do not usually satisfy our entrance requirements. If you have not completed the International Baccalaureate, A-levels, or the American High School Diploma, you will be required to complete a Foundation Year Programme. Further details of this can be found from the Centre for International Foundation Programmes.

Applicants to Medicine should refer directly to the School of Medicine.

Postgraduate - academic requirements

Postgraduate candidates will be expected to hold an Honours Bachelor's degree with an overall mark of 1st Class, 5, 70-74% or Distinction.

The degree of MD (Medicine) requires a medical qualification that is recognised by the UK General Council.

English language requirements

All students entering the University must provide evidence that they can use English well enough to study effectively at St Andrews.

We accept a wide range of language tests and qualifications as proof of English language proficiency. If you were educated outside the UK and/or use English as an additional language, you should include information about your English language proficiency with your application.

Pre-sessional courses

In order to fully prepare yourself for academic study, you can attend one of our pre-sessional courses. These combine language development with academic skills and orientation and provide an excellent introduction to university life.

It may be a condition of your offer that you are required to take a 10-week or 4-week pre-sessional course.

You can find out more about pre-sessional courses in the pre-sessional courses section.

Visas and English language proficiency

Overseas students typically need a visa to study in the UK. See the visa section below to find out more about the English language proficiency tests required to obtain a visa.
